Getting Started with EMC2

Install and Setup

(syncRo 3 users can skip this part)

EMC2 is open-source machine control software. It is free. It runs on the linux operating system which can run on most PCs. We use EMC2.4 with Ubuntu Linux 10.04. Downloads and in depth tutorials are available on the EMC2 website.

Once you have EMC2 installed and running grab the micRo/m3 config files from our support site.

Running EMC 2

Following these instructions is very important. Especially step 6.

  1. From the application menu choose CNC --> EMC2
  2. Select the appropriate config file (v3 or m3 - with or without auto-homing)
  3. Turn off the E-stop by pressing the top left button (red circle with X)
  4. Power on EMC by pressing the square machine power button to the right of the e-stop
  5. If you have a syncRo 3 and robot with homing switches you can press the "Home All" button. The robot will move until it hits the switches to stop. Without auto-homing each axis must be homed individually.
  6. Important: Under the View menu select "World Mode". Running the bot in joint mode will un-sync the X axis.
